How to Use Direction and Life Areas
Score your life areas, read the stated-versus-actual alignment gap, and set goals against the areas that need them most.
How to Use Direction and Life Areas
Direction is the Blueprint's honesty mirror. It shows how each area of your life scores today against where you want it, and — more usefully — where the share of life you SAY an area deserves diverges from the share your actual tracked effort gives it. Then it holds the goals that close those gaps.
Operational Directive
Trust the gap, not the vibe. The 'actual' share of your life comes from tracked time and effort, not from how busy an area feels. Direction is where good intentions meet the evidence.
Section ProtocolWhat Direction shows you
| Element | What it tells you | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Life-area wheel | Current score vs your desired marker | A short bar with a far marker means a big gap |
| Stated vs actual | Intended share of life vs tracked effort | Positive gap = under-served; negative = over-invested |
| Goals | The outcomes closing your biggest gaps | Set them against the areas that need it most |
Section ProtocolReading the alignment gap
This is the part worth slowing down for. For each life area, Direction compares two numbers: the share of your life you have said it deserves (your stated intent) and the share your tracked time and effort actually give it (your derived reality). The difference is the gap.
- ▶A positive gap means the area is under-served — you value it more than you resource it.
- ▶A negative gap means the area is over-invested — it is taking more of you than you intended.
The gap is where your goals should go. An area that says it deserves 30 percent of your life but receives 12 percent of your tracked effort is telling you exactly where to point next.
Section ProtocolHow to use it
- ▶Read the wheel for the raw picture — which areas sit farthest from their desired marker.
- ▶Read stated-versus-actual to see where intent and effort diverge.
- ▶Set one or two goals against the biggest gaps, not all nine areas at once.
- ▶Let those goals pull tracked effort toward the under-served areas, then watch the gap close over the coming quarter.
⚠Common Traps
Section ProtocolWorked example
Ravi's wheel shows Career at 4 against a desired 8, and Health at 6 against 8. Stated-versus-actual reveals Career should hold 30 percent of his effort but tracks at 12 percent — a positive 18 percent gap, badly under-served. He sets one career goal and links his focus sessions to it. Over the quarter, the tracked share climbs and the gap narrows, and the change shows up in his next Quarterly Review score.
